The Mexican and US telecoms giants America Movil and AT&T have signed a memorandum of understanding to “explore ways of delivering enhanced communications services” to multinationals, paving the way for greater co-operation in each other’s core markets.
In a statement, the companies said that the MoU calls on the companies to develop means of both expanding their IP networks and working together to form Virtual Private Network (VPN) services for multinationals working in Latin America.
The partnership, which still needs to be finalised, will allow AT&T to deepen its existing reach in Latin America using America Movil’s networks in 15 countries in the region.
America Movil will be able to use AT&T’s global network infrastructure to provide global IP-based services to customers in the US and elsewhere in the world.
AT&T currently holds a 9.3% stake in America Movil.
Roman Pacewicz , SVP of marketing and global strategy at AT&T Business Solutions, described the MoU with America Movil as part of AT&T’s strategy to establish alliances in key regions of the world.
He said that this would involve the harmonisation of infrastructure, processes, services and systems that would produce “unprecedented value” for business customers.
Earlier this year, AT&T announced that it had become the first foreign telecoms operator to receive a multimedia services operator (MSO) licence in Indonesia, which will allow it to provide services to multinationals in the country.
Those services include VPN and other value-added data services, global managed network services and other business applications.
