Peruvian state news agency Andina reported that America Móvil has won the tender to provide telecoms services in rural areas of the country.
America Móvil beat off competition from Movistar, Telefónica of Spain’s local unit and a consortium called TECV.
The Mexican-owned telco will now have to deploy 471km of fibre optic cabling that will provide public and local telephony as well as broadband services in 370 rural municipalities in the Puno and Madre de Dios regions.
America Móvil Peru asked for US$8.9m in financing from the country’s telecoms fund Fitel, while Movistar Peru and TECV asked for US$11.4m and US$11.9m respectively.
The process has come to a happy conclusion after it was originally cancelled in July, as the bidders at that time did not provide the financial workings of their plans to ProInversion, Peru’s state agency for promoting private investment.
