Ahead of today’s announcement of the winners of the auction 30MHz block of 1.7GHz band, América Móvil’s CEO Daniel Hajj told investors he expects victory and will be bringing 4G to Mexico.
Speaking in a conference call giving details of the fourth largest mobile company’s Q2’10 results, Hajj said the company has won spectrum in one of the three blocks being auctioned, on top of the 20MHz national coverage and 10MHz in three regions it already holds.
“With that we think we can be prepared to offer 4G. We do not know exactly when but we are reviewing when it would be good for Telcel to start putting in that infrastructure. I think that is very good for us because it gives us the alternative to increase on the data side of our business which is the one that is growing a lot,” he said.
The auctions were organised to break Carlos Slim’s grip on the Mexican telecommunications industry and encourage new players into the markets. However, América Móvil is Slim’s flagship operator.
