The Dominican Republic’s telecoms regulator Indotel is considering a complete overhaul of the existing telecommunications law, according to its website. This will allow it to adapt to changes expected over the next 20 years.
Jose Rafael Vargas, the regulator’s head, has proposed setting up a working group to draw up proposals over the next two years to overhaul law 153-98. The official pointed out that there are several projects intended to develop telecommunications in the country such as the expansion of the Arcos fiber optic submarine cable that will land in Punta Cana and connect with the NAP of the Caribbean. There is also a project to develop a fiber optic highway running through the country.
