Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has named Ahmed Al-Derbesti as its new group chief operating officer.
Al-Derbesti, who has worked for the Qatari incumbent since 1985, will work in the areas of customer service, performance management, broadband and other digital technologies, according to a company statement. Reporting directly to the group CEO, he will work with management teams across the entire group, present in 17 countries.
Al-Derbesti, who succeeds Waleed Al-Sayed, has held a variety of positions within the company, most recently as chief officer of wholesale and international services, with responsibility for national and international voice, data and roaming services.
Qtel has ambitious expansion plans and CEO Nasser Marafih recently said it planned to make acquisitions and boost stakes in existing holdings.
On 28 May, the company announced its QR6.86bn (US$1.9bn) rights issue had been fully subscribed, saying the proceeds would be used for general corporate purposes, including the refinancing of existing debt.
