Digital Phone Company (DPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of cellco Advanced Info Service (AIS), has requested CAT Telecom’s permission to test 4G LTE technology, according to local newspaper The Nation.
DPC, whose concession is owned by CAT, is reportedly looking to test LTE equipment from vendors Huawei, ZTE, and Ericsson on its 1800MHz spectrum.
A source close to the matter was quoted saying that each vendor will need to ask permission from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) before conducting the tests.
This report comes a couple of months after CAT and cellco True Move signed a 3G partnership to provide mobile services.
This alliance brings some relief for True, whose 2G licence expires in 2013 while the 3G licence auction in the country is still on hold.
However, the NTC was recently reported saying that the partnership may breach the new frequency allocation law and affect competition in the 3G market.
