The managing director of mobile operator Airtel Malawi, Saulos Chilima, has left the company to “pursue other personal interests”, the company said.
Finance director Amadou Dina will replace him on an interim basis.
Chilima was quoted telling reporters that he resigned to pursue a career in politics and is expected to take part in the presidential election in May as running mate to Democratic Progressive Party candidate Peter Mutharika.
Chilima’s resignation comes as India’s Bharti Airtel, the parent of Airtel Malawi, is making key changes to its leadership.
Manoj Kohli, managing director and CEO of Bharti’s international operations, will step down from the position on 1 April. Meanwhile, Christian de Faria, managing director and CEO of the telco’s African business, will assume full operational control over its units in 17 African geographies.
