Airtel Kenya, the country’s second-largest mobile operator, has appointed Titus Naikuni as its new chairman.
He most recently served as chief executive of Kenya Airways and, before that, was a permanent secretary to the country’s ministry of information, transport and communications.
Naikuni replaces Naushad Merali, who retired in May after 15 years at the company. Merali founded Airtel Kenya, then known as Kencell, with France’s Vivendi in 1999.
The operator, which last month appointed Venkat Ramakrishnan as its finance director, is in the process of acquiring assets from rival Yu Mobile. The struggling company is being split between Airtel and market leader Safaricom in deal that will consolidate the Kenyan market to three wireless players.
Airtel Kenya is a subsidiary of Indian giant Bharti Airtel, which operates across 20 countries in Africa and Asia.
