The Central Bank of Bangladesh has approved a US$100m foreign loan sought by Airtel Bangladesh to expand its network.
A spokesperson for the company said the financing is a routine fundraising for its business requirements.
Last September, the mobile operator secured some 3G spectrum for US$105m.
Several other local companies also received the green light to borrow foreign funding. The total amount of those various loans is US$169m.
This is the second time in just over a year that the operator receives approval to raise foreign loans. Last April, it secured US$200m, as the government was looking to support the country’s telecoms market.
Airtel, which is fully owned by Bharti Airtel since the Indian telco increased its stake last year, lags behind the three top operators in Bangladesh: Telenor’s Grameenphone, GTH’s Banglalink, and Axiata’s Robi.
