Indian mobile operator Aircel is not looking to acquire rival companies, Sandip Das, CEO of Aircel’s parent Maxis Communications, told the Economic Times.
Aircel is number seven out of the 15 mobile carriers currently operating in the country. Consolidation has long been awaited in the mobile market as the smallest operators are struggling to survive.
Das, however, said that Aircel could engage in network sharing with other operators in the light of increasing competition and cost pressures.
In the meantime, he rejected rumours that Malaysia-based Maxis was planning to sell its 74% stake in Aircel, saying that such reports demoralise the company’s staff.
Aircel has reportedly not been affected by the Supreme Court’s recent decision to revoke 122 licences in the wake of the country’s 2G scandal.
