Indian mobile operator Aircel has partnered with Reliance Communications (RCom) to launch 3G services in the Mumbai region, a company spokesperson confirmed.
Aircel, which is majority-owned by Malaysia’s Maxis, reportedly paid nearly Rs65bn (US$1bn) in the 2010 spectrum auction for 3G airwaves in 13 telecoms service areas, excluding the lucrative Mumbai market.
RCom along with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone won spectrum in Mumbai.
Revised telecoms regulations permit operators to team up with others to launch services in areas where they do not hold a licence.
Chennai-based Aircel already offers 3G services in Delhi and Rajasthan.
