Telecoms operator Africell has completed its acquisition of Orange Uganda from the French telecoms incumbent.
Financial details have not been disclosed but TelecomFinance previously learnt that the price tag was around the US$10m mark.
Orange Uganda is the country’s fourth-largest wireless player and lags behind MTN, Airtel and UT Mobile.
In an interview with TelecomFinance a few months ago, Africell CEO Ziad Dalloul said that his company has set itself the challenge of turning the Ugandan operator around within a year.
“Orange has built a very good network with nationwide coverage and we’re a nimble organisation. We can react fast and encourage creativity in our organisation at every level,” he stressed.
Africell, which also has mobile operations in Sierra Leone, the Gambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, said today that the Ugandan deal will add 700,000 subscribers to its portfolio, taking its customer base to 11 million.
The company expects gross revenues of more than US$270m this year and of US$350m and US$500m in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
Orange launched a strategic review of its Ugandan and Kenyan units a few months back, in an attempt to either find strategic partners or exit the businesses. The process in Kenya is still ongoing.
