Spanish infrastructure company Abertis is reportedly considering a bid to become a TV network provider in Chile.
Local newspaper Diario Financiero reported that Lluis Subira, the head of Abertis’s Chilean operations, had expressed a desire to move into the area of providing TV and telecoms network services.
The move has been encouraged by the fact that some TV channels are interested in creating an integrated digital TV network.
Subira described his company as a neutral telecoms provider, since it manages the network but does not own telecoms companies or TV/radio broadcasters.
Abertis telecom units in Spain manage a network of 3,200 points providing TV and radio signals covering over 12 million homes. It describes itself as “Spain’s core operator” in the deployment of DTT technology.
It is the largest shareholder in Spanish satellite operator Hispasat, and has a 32% stake in French satellite operator Eutelsat.
