Five telecom operators have requested to take part in Italy’s upcoming 4G auction, according to the country’s industry ministry.
Mobile firms Telecom Italia, Vodafone, Wind, 3 Italia and local Wimax operator Linkem have all registered interest to the government, which will determine their admissibility tomorrow.
Reports had previously suggested that Italian post office Poste Italiane, which operates a mobile division, could have been interested in taking part.
The government hopes its sale of frequencies in the 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2000 MHz and 2600MHz bands will raise as much as E3.1bn for the treasury.
Accepted participants must submit economic bids by 29 August.
Meanwhile, Spain’s 4G auction is still awaiting a final conclusion, nearly a month after officially kicking off its own bidding process.
Some 11 undisclosed telecom operators have been granted the right to participate in Spain’s sale of a total 270 MHz of spectrum in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 2600MHz bands.
Spain’s mobile operators are Telefonica, Vodafone and Orange, while cablecos Ono, Euskatel and R Cable are also expected to participate.
