A representative of the telecoms ministry has been cited saying that that 3G network installation will go ahead despite legal threats from ISP Cedarcom.
Cedarcom accuses the government of unlawfully contracting foreign companies [Orascom and Zain] to carry out the upgrades, and thereby causing “the expulsion” of the private sector.
Egypt-based Orascom and Kuwait-based Zain’s respective local companies, Alfa and MTC Touch, run the country’s two mobile networks on behalf of the government.
Mahmoud Haidar, adviser to telecoms minister Charbel Nahhas, brushed off the accusations, saying that as state-owned companies, they do not need licences to carry out the work.
He added that the emphasis was on the ends rather than the means, since it was vital that the country’s long-running efforts to get 3G be achieved. Lebanon has been promising to auction 3G licences for at least four years.
Once the networks are up and running, the private sector would have access to 3G networks, Haidar said.
