IslandCom has become the Turks & Caicos’ third mobile network, alongside C&W subsidiary LIME and Digicel. The joint venture company partnered with Bermuda Digital Communication (BTC), a subsidiary of Atlantic TeleNetwork, will be the only 3G provider in the Caribbean nation, offering 3G services to its 22,000 inhabitants.
As the new kid on the block, IslandCom Wireless’s director, Sandra Garland said its objective was not to capture the market from competitors, but “to offer a dynamic suite of products and services that will brighten every mobile user’s life.”
In the past year, IslandCom added six new cell sites, and by the end of this year, would have 3G services on 19 sites around the country, including Grand Turk, Provo, North Caicos, Middle Caicos and South Caicos.
BTC and IslandCom, which have invested almost US$6m in building a 3G Network in the Turks & Caicos, have since the end of last year been testing the network’s performance.
Kate Bonner, CEO of IslandCom, said the company wanted to ensure that its network was operating at optimum capacity before offering it to the public.
