Turkcell has named Ahmet Akca as the new chairman of its board of directors.
The Turkish mobile operator announced that Akca was elected to the position at a board of directors meeting on 19 August.
The move follows the Turkish Capital Market Board’s (SPK’s) appointment of two additional independent directors to the Turkcell management board last week. The new members will retain their seats until the company’s feuding three major shareholders – Russia’s Altimo, Turkey’s Cukurova and Sweden’s TeliaSonera – appoint their own, SPK said.
SPK also appointed three independent directors in March, meaning that the number of government-appointed directors on the Turkcell board has now reached five, with two seats left to fill. Last Friday, SPK said it had given major shareholders 15 days to nominate two candidates each for the remaining seats.
Turkcell’s three major shareholders have disagreed over the mobile operator’s ownership and governance for several years. They have repeatedly failed to hold an AGM to appoint new board members or agree dividend payments.
Commenting on the two latest board appointments, a TeliaSonera spokesperson said the company was “disappointed that it has come to this”, adding that it wants shareholders to have influence in line with their holdings.
