Indian operator Bharti Airtel has recruited Jean Pierre Kiwakana Kimayala as the chairman of its operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kiwakana Kimayala previously served as an economic adviser to the President of the DRC and also worked in the private sector.
Bharti describes him as a “seasoned economist and owner of private businesses in the DRC”.
Commenting on the appointment, the Airtel’s CEO for the Francophone region in Africa, Tiemoko Coulibaly, said: “I am confident that Mr Kiwakana Kimayala’s rich and diverse experience will add immense value to our transformational projects.”
Kimayala will head up the board of Airtel DRC in what Bharti hopes will be a high-growth market – mobile penetration in the country currently stands at 25%.
Bharti, India’s largest operator, offers services in 17 African countries and can count more than 63 million customers on the continent. As of this year, Airtel DRC offers 3G services in the country.
