The Bahamas Investment Authority is reviewing a number of applications to provide mobile services in the country from next year as the sector is set to be liberalised.
According to local newspaper The Nassau Guardian, the authority is reviewing at least two or three proposals from prospective new entrants; Denis O’Brien’s Digicel is the only confirmed applicant so far.
Commenting on the process, a Digicel spokeswoman said: “We are delighted to see that competition in the mobile sector in The Bahamas may become a reality and remain interested in the opportunity to be a part of that process.
“We are monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis.”
Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC), which is 51%-owned by Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), has the monopoly of the Bahamas mobile sector.
