Norwegian telco Telenor has appointed Petter Furberg, CFO of Thai mobile operator Dtac, to lead its expansion into Myanmar’s nascent telecoms market.
The group also gave the first glimpse of the new unit’s executive management team, which is set to include Lars Tellmann, SVP of Telenor Asia, as CFO.
Gunnar Bertelsen, VP of regulatory and government relations for Telenor Asia, has been put forward for the role of chief corporate affairs officer.
All the appointments require the Myanmar government’s approval.
Dtac, which is majority owned by Telenor, said it has yet to appoint a successor for its CFO position.
Telenor and Qatar’s Ooredoo emerged as victors in the country’s first competitive auction of mobile licences last month, largely due to their experience in South East Asia and ability to quickly deploy networks.
The government said yesterday that Telenor has committed to covering 83% of Myanmar’s geography with voice and 78% with data services in five years. Within this time, the telco also pledged to create more than 70,000 points of sale where SIM cards can be bought, and more than 95,000 places where top-ups can be purchased.
Incoming CEO Furberg said: “I am thrilled with the opportunity to lead Telenor Myanmar at this very exciting time in the country’s emerging telecommunications industry.
“The executive management team that has been put in place combines a vast amount of global industry experience with a deep understanding of Asia and I am confident that we will fulfil our promise of bringing high quality, accessible and affordable mobile services to people throughout Myanmar.”
