T-Mobile US CEO John Legere has said he is “intrigued” by Dish Network chairman Charlie Ergen’s vision to integrate his DTH business with a wireless operator.
In two media interviews yesterday Legere said the Deutsche Telekom subsidiary was open to all strategic options.
Sprint, recently acquired by Softbank, was another business which interested him, according to an interview with Cnet. He would not be drawn on a potential deal with the operator, although he did predict that the Softbank deal would leave Sprint in a powerful position in 2015.
In relation to Ergen, Legere told the Wall Street Journal that T-Mobile was not in talks with him “per se” but praised his proposal to combine Dish’s satellite operations with a wireless operator.
This spring Dish has tried and failed to acquire Sprint and Clearwire, ultimately thwarted by Japanese telco Softbank.
T-Mobile is seen as the natural next target for Dish to look at as the DTH broadcaster looks to deploy its spectrum reserves.
T-Mobile completed its merger with MetroPCS earlier this year and its stock has performed impressively – it was US$16.24 when the merger closed, now its at US$24.97.
