The lower house of Myanmar’s parliament today decided to postpone the awarding of two telecoms licences, expected for tomorrow.
The lawmakers voted to push back the decision, which had been highly anticipated, until a new telecoms law has been decided upon, reports said. The law is still at drafting stage.
The vote came following a motion by a member of the parliament’s telecoms committee calling for the delay.
The announcement of the winners of the tender has been highly anticipated. Following a pre-qualification process, eleven parties were allowed to compete in the tender, including Ooredoo, Millicom, France Telecom, Bharti, Telenor, Digicel, and others.
The Myanmar government had previously planned to announce the winners tomorrow (27 June).
