UK telecoms incumbent BT has promoted Gavin Patterson, head of its retail division, to CEO of the group.
Patterson will replace Ian Livingston, who will join the country’s government at the end of this year as Minister of State for Trade and Investment.
BT chairman Sir Michael Rake said: “We have a fitting and experienced successor in Gavin Patterson. He has a detailed knowledge of all parts of our business and a track record of success.
“He was closely involved in creating our strategy and is the right person to take it forward.”
After acquiring its own 4G spectrum earlier this year, the operator recently kicked off a search for a mobile partner as it seeks to leverage on its position in the wifi market.
BT is also heavily involved in a government programme aimed at delivering superfast broadband to at least 90% of the UK by 2015. However, the company’s predominant role in this scheme will reportedly attract criticism in a report next month by the National Audit Office, an independent body responsible for monitoring UK government departments and agencies.
