Tele2 Russia has appointed former Rostelecom head Alexander Provotorov as its new CEO.
Provotorov, who was replaced by Sergey Kalugin as CEO of Rostelecom in late March, will also join Tele2’s board of directors, the mobile operator’s new owner VTB Bank announced.
Provotorov replaces Jere Calmes, who took up the role in February. Calmes will remain with the company as first deputy general director, responsible for operations, and also join the board of directors.
Commenting on the appointments, VTB first deputy president and chairman of the bank’s management board Yuri Soloviev said the organisation is very pleased with Tele2 Russia’s financial and operational results for the first quarter.
“I am sure that Alexander Provotorov will make a significant contribution to the further successful development of Tele2 and will help transform the company into one of the leaders in the telecommunications market,” he said.
Provotorov became CEO of Rostelecom in August 2010. His replacement was widely anticipated, following reports that the government was unhappy with the Moscow-based telco’s share price and plans to expand in mobile. During his time with the state-controlled operator, he oversaw developments such as the integration of several regional operators and the commencement of the operator’s merger with state-controlled holding company Svyazinvest.
VTB completed its acquisition of Tele2 Russia from Sweden’s Tele2 group in April.
