Vietnamese telco Viettel was on the verge of finalising a deal to acquire a stake in Haitian state-controlled operator Teleco when the earthquake hit the country just under a month ago.
Viettel’s deputy general director Nguyen Manh Quan was reported in Vietnamese newspaper Tuoi Tre Online saying that the telco remains committed to its planned investments in Haiti. Viettel was both due to take a stake in Teleco and had already inked the deal to partner with Teleco on the installation of a 2,000 km long fibre-optic cable network, which would provide broadband internet access to much of the island.
