The Macedonian regulator has announced a public tender for mobile spectrum in the 790-862MHz and 1710-1800MHz bands.
The Agency for Electronic Communications (AEK) announced that the tender is open to domestic and foreign mobile operators with at least 300,000 subscribers as at 31 December 2012 and assets of at least €10m.
Licences will last for 20 years from 1 September 2013, the regulator said. Successful bidders are required to extend coverage to at least 20% of the population within two years of obtaining their licences. They must service at least 40% of the population within four years, and at least 70% within six years.
The minimum price for spectrum in certain bands is €1m and in other others €2m.
The public opening of the tender is set to take place on 24 June and AEK expects to announce participating bidders within seven days. The tender itself is expected to take place within 30 days of this announcement.
Macedonia’s three largest mobile operators are Deutsche Telekom-controlled T-Mobile, Telekom Austria-controlled One and Telekom Slovenije-controlled Vip.
