Four Colombian mobile operators have agreed to jointly develop infrastructure to offer 4G services following the auction for licences in the 2.5GHz and 1.9GHz bands next month.
ETB, Colombia Movil (Tigo), Telefonica’s Movistar and UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones will share their networks to better utilise their resources and promote competition, UNE said in a statement.
UNE – owned by the city of Medellin’s utility EPM – and Tigo have been in discussions to merge since February; UNE did not apply to take part in the 4G auction.
Colombia’s communications ministry and the national spectrum agency, Ane, are set to auction 4G spectrum on 26 June. Six companies have applied to take part, including Tigo, Claro and Movistar. The licences will come with build-out requirements and coverage commitments.
