Naguib Sawiris, the Egyptian telecoms investor, is mulling ways to re-enter Italy.
Sawiris tried to acquire a stake in incumbent Telecom Italia several months ago, but the company’s board rejected the approach in early December.
In an interview with Bloomberg he now confirmed his interest in striking a deal in the country.
Sawiris previously owned operator Wind Telecomunicazioni SpA, which he exited in 2011 via a sale to VimpelCom. According to the report he would now consider buying back Wind, but he is also examining other investment opportunities.
Naguib Sawiris is chairman and co-founder of telecoms investment fund Accelero Capital, which was created about a year ago.
Accelero is currently also working on a bid for Wind Canada, which was recently put up for sale by VimpelCom. The investment vehicle has teamed up with founder and current Wind Canada CEO Anthony Lacavera.
