Indian mobile operator Uninor, majority-controlled by Norway’s Telenor, has appointed Yogesh Malik as its new CEO with immediate effect.
He replaces Sigve Brekke, who will continue to be responsible for all of Telenor affairs in India as the head of Telenor Group’s Asian operations.
Malik joined the company as COO in 2011. He had previously held positions at Telenor’s headquarter in Norway. He was also CTO for the company’s subsidiaries in Ukraine and Bangladesh.
Commenting on the appointment, Brekke said: “Taking responsibility for our Indian operations was always meant to be temporary, but with all the challenges that we faced, my period in India became longer than intended.”
After months of a bitter dispute over management, Telenor finally reached an agreement with Indian real estate company Unitech, its former partner in Uninor, in October last year.
Under the settlement, Unitech agreed to dispose of all its shares in Uninor, which are in the process of being transferred to a new JV.
Also last year, Uninor acquired 20-year licences for six of India’s 22 circles when frequencies were re-auctioned following the country’s telecoms scandal. Meanwhile, it shut down services in Kolkata, Mumbai, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa and Tamil Nadu, where its 2G licences were cancelled.
