Belgian regulator BIPT has warned local cablecos Telenet and Voo may face a fine after the companies failed to deploy 3G services by the 15 January 2013 deadline.
Two years ago, Telenet and Voo were awarded Belgium’s fourth 3G licence to launch services as a combined entity.
However, according to the regulator the companies have yet to deploy services and therefore risk a fine and a maximum period of six months to fulfil their obligations.
BIPT added that in case of a repeated infraction the licence could be revoked.
Telenet and Voo, who teamed up in a bidco for the auction process two years ago, made a request to postpone the deadline, reportedly arguing that they need to lease infrastructure from existing operators to be able to offer competitive services. However in early April, BIPT decided against postponing that deadline.
In Belgium, three operators currently offer 3G services: Proximus, Mobistar and Base.
