Mexican media firm Grupo Televisa has sought approval from the country’s antitrust regulator to acquire a stake in Nextel’s Latin American mobile operator NII Holdings, according to local reports.
A statement from the regulator is expected within 30 days. Televisa is eyeing a stake in NII Holdings, which operates the smallest of Mexico’s four mobile operators, with has a 3.6% market share and some 2.9 million subscribers.
NII Holdings operates across five of the Central American countries. Both Nextel and Televisa have acquired bidding rules for the upcoming Mexican mobile licence auction.
