Uruguay’s telecoms regulator Ursec has raised US$64m by selling four blocks of spectrum to both Telefonica and America Movil.
Government-owned Antel did not participate in the tender because it had already been allocated licences by the regulator. It was determined that Antel would pay US$38m for its five blocks, based upon the prices paid by Telefonica and America Movil for similar blocks. In total the licences sold for US$102m – in line with expectations.
Telefonica acquired four licences in the 1900MHz band. America Movil obtained two blocks in the 1900MHz band and two in the 1700MHz/2100MHz band. The licences had a reserve price of US$7.5m each.
Antel is the dominant operator in Uruguay controlling 47% of the wireless market, according to Ursec statistics for last year. Telefonica’s Movistar brand has a 37% share and America Movil’s Claro has the remaining 16%.
