Egypt will set out details for the pricing of a fourth mobile communications licence by H2/2013, according to the head of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA).
Amr Badawi, CEO of the regulator, reportedly made the remarks at a press briefing with local journalists.
In December, the NTRA had said that it would allow Telecom Egypt (TE) to launch mobile services in H1 without owning frequencies.
“Hence, Telecom Egypt will start its provision of the mobile services through mobile service providers operating in the market by reselling their provided services,” the regulator said at the time.
It is now expected that TE will be awarded the new licence.
Currently mobile players Mobinil, Vodafone Egypt, and Etisalat are competing in the country.
In return for granting TE access to their respective frequencies, the mobile operators will be allowed to apply for access to TE’s fixed line infrastructure.
Telecom Egypt currently has a monopoly on landlines.
