Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao has suggested Romanian mobile operators consider network sharing to avoid unnecessary expenses.
Colao told Romanian publication ZF that it does not make financial sense for the nation’s mobile operators to each have their own networks, describing it as “money wasted”.
He said he does not have a problem sharing infrastructure with a competitor when a reciprocal agreement can be reached elsewhere.
He suggested Romtelecom, in which Greece’s OTE holds a 54.01% stake and the Romanian government holds the remainder, look into opening up its network to peers – a move which should increase its revenues.
Colao noted that overseas-based operators in Romania are all in the market for the long-term, making a network sharing particularly sensible.
Romania raised €682m from a spectrum auction in September, awarding frequencies to Vodafone, Orange, Cosmote, RCS&RDS and 2k Telecom.
