The European Commission is threatening to sue France over its special tax on the revenue of telecom operators.
The tax, introduced to offset last year’s ban on public advertising, is incompatible with European law and could eventually harm consumers, the EC said in a formal notice.
The French government has two months to reply to the warning, which represents the first stage of an infringement procedure.
If the reply is unsatisfactory, the Commission can move to the second phase, consisting of issuing a reasoned opinion.
If no settlement is then reached, the EC can refer the case to the European Court of Justice.
