Moldova is set to auction a licence for radio spectrum in the 3750-3800MHz band.
Telecoms regulator ANRCETI will conduct the auction, launching the invitation process on 10 December, the regulator said in a release.
The auction is in line with a government decree on the development of public broadband communications networks and services which recommended the regulator auction a licence for 50MHz of radio spectrum on the 3750-3800MHz band.
The licence will be valid for 15 years and the starting price is €1m.
If an existing mobile operator won the auction it would be required to cover at least 30% of the country within the first 18 months. New entrants will have 36 months to reach the same target.
Entities from Moldova and abroad will be invited to participate.
“ANRCETI specialists consider that the issuance of this licence will help attract investments in the development of new internet access technologies and stimulate competition on the market for public broadband internet services, especially services provided in rural areas,” the regulator said.
ANRCETI noted that 3600-3800MHz spectrum is generally used for WiMax technology.
Moldova currently has four mobile operators: Orange Moldova, Moldcell, Unite and Interdnestrcom (IDC).
