A consortium of telcos, including Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) and Telefonica Global Solutions, plan to finance a 6,000km telecommunications cable. Financing details for the project were not revealed.
The Pacific Caribbean Cable System (PCCS) will be built by Alcatel Lucent and will span from Florida to Ecuador, touching down across LatAm and the Caribbean on the way.
The other telcos involved are Aruba’s Setar, Ecuador’s Telconet and Curacao’s UTS.
“Our participation in the PCCS cable will help us to support increased broadband penetration and usage in the pan-American markets in which we operate,” said CWC in a statement.
“The cable will also add to our extensive subsea cable assets in the key corridor between north and south America, one of the fastest growing routes in the world for internet data transit.”
Work on the cable will start before the end of the year and it will be operational by Q3 2014.
