Telefonica has recruited BofA Merrill Lynch’s former head of European telecoms equity research as director of corporate strategy.
Jesus Romero joins the telco after ten years at the investment bank. He will report to Eduardo Navarro, Telefonica’s director of strategy and alliances, a Telefonica spokesperson said.
According to the Financial Services Authority register Romero left his role at Merrill Lynch in August.
The move comes as Telefonica is battling a mountain of debt.
Recent reports suggest that the operator is considering listing a minority stake in its Latin American businesses as a single holding company in New York next year.
In its Q3 results Telefonica revealed net debt of €56bn, down €2.3bn from the end of Q2.
The company has made a number of disposals and refinanced part of its debt.
