Vodafone India has been awarded spectrum licences in the country’s 2G spectrum auction, costing the telco INR11.28bn (US$219m).
The Indian arm of the telco group won licences in 14 telecom zones, including Kerala and Madhya Pradesh.
“Vodafone’s decision to participate in the 2G auction was to secure additional spectrum in circles where it has not received new 2G spectrum since 2008,” said the company in a statement.
The announcement comes a day after the group CFO told analysts that the company was not planning on setting aside the US$2.2bn that India’s amended tax laws required for retrospective tax cross-border transactions, according to media reports.
TelecomFinance reported yesterday that Telenor, Idea Cellular and Videocon were awarded 2G licences in the auction, but the government raised less than a quarter of its sale target with bids totalling INR94bn (US$1.7bn).
