The CEO of South African ICT outsourcing company BonCom has reportedly said it is seeking a tie-up with Zimbabwean state-owned telco TelOne by the end of the year.
The Zimbabwean newspaper quoted CEO Preddy Mothopeng as saying BonCom held investment-related talks with TelOne, ISP Powertel and “a few other” telcos during a recent visit to the country as part of the fourth South Africa-Zimbabwe Trade and Investment delegation.
Saying South Africa has a lot of money to invest in Zimbabwe, Mothopeng added that he plans to return to the country shortly to continue negotiations.
South Africa’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Vusi Mavimbela, has since urged companies from both African nations to form joint ventures and present South African financial institutions with viable proposals, according to the report.
TelOne – Zimbabwe’s only fixed-line provider – was in talks with South African peer Telkom SA over a possible tie-up earlier this year, but they did not result in any agreement, the report stated. TelOne’s sizeable debt pile was said to be a major reason negotiations broke down.
TelOne was not immediately available for comment.
