Qtel refused to answer questions about its rumoured acquisition of a stake in Maroc Telecom, during a conference call to discuss its nine-month results today.
The Qatari telco is lining up a bid for Vivendi’s 53% controlling stake in Maroc Telecom, as is UAE rival Etisalat, according to media reports citing people with knowledge of the situation.
Spokespersons from Vivendi, Qtel and Etisalat all refused to comment on the speculation when contacted by TelecomFinance.
Vivendi is in talks with Credit Agricole and Lazard with a view to hiring them to coordinate the sale, the UK’s Financial Times reported earlier this month, citing three unidentified sources. Lazard refused to comment on the deal today and Credit Agricole did not respond to enquiries by the deadline.
In an interview with TelecomFinance in April, Qtel’s CEO Nasser Marafih said that the group “will continue to examine opportunities for investment as they emerge across our target territories of the Middle East, North Africa, Southeast Asia and the Asian subcontinent.”
