US operator Sprint Nextel has appointed Michael Schwartz as the company’s new president of strategic planning and corporate initiatives.
He replaces Keith Cowan, who was recognised as being the number three operator’s top M&A executive.
It was announced in August that Cowan would leave the Kansas-headquartered company to return to his hometown of Atlanta to focus on local civic and charity initiatives.
Cowan was due to leave his post at the end of September but Sprint’s CEO decided that should now be 2 January 2013 as his successor cannot take up the post until then.
Schwartz is currently VP of marketing, corporate development and regulatory at Telesat Canada, and cannot leave his position until the end of the year.
The news comes amid reports that Sprint could rival T-Mobile USA’s bid for MetroPCS, or could allow the companies to merge and then attempt to acquire the resulting entity.
