Deutsche Telekom (DT) subsidiary T-Mobile USA is close to a deal to acquire MetroPCS, according to media reports.
Citing people with knowledge of the matter, Bloomberg writes that DT’s supervisory board will meet in Germany tomorrow [Wednesday, 3 October] to approve a deal that may be announced on the same day.
According to the report a share swap might be part of the transaction.
MetroPCS’ share price was up by 18.32%, the highest since the beginning of August 2011, resulting in a market capitalisation of US$4.93bn.
Following a merger, the entity would be floated in the US, according to the Bloomberg report.
Speculation that T-Mobile, the market’s number four operator by subscribers, would acquire a smaller carrier has been rife since AT&T’s attempt to acquire T-Mobile USA was effectively blocked on antitrust grounds late last year.
In May it was reported that DT was considering merging MetroPCS with T-Mobile in a stock swap transaction.
In late February number three operator Sprint had decided against a US$8bn bid for MetroPCS, according to reports at the time.
