The Nepalese government is preparing to divest 30% of Nepal Telecom (NT), according to a local press report.
The state currently owns 91.5% of Nepal Telecom shares.
The Himalayan Times reported that a committee has recommended that the government bring in a strategic partner in the next 18 to 22 months.
The government has been saying it would find a strategic partner for more than five years, the report noted, but the necessary steps have not been taken.
The committee has proposed a plan starting with NT presenting itself to potential partners and inviting expressions of interest.
NT has a monopoly on fixed-line services in Nepal while it is second in the country’s wireless duopoly, marginally behind Ncell, a telco 80%-owned by TeliaSonera.
