Deutsche Telekom has named John Legere as the new CEO of T-Mobile USA.
He succeeds Jim Ailing who had been interim CEO following the departure of Philipp Humm in June to take over north and central Europe at Vodafone. Ailing will return to his role as COO.
Legere was previously CEO at IP services company Global Crossing and has held roles at Dell and AT&T in the past.
“John is a talented and proven executive who brings a successful track record of leading and operating consumer- and business-focused telecommunications and technology companies,” said Rene Obermann, CEO at Deutsche Telekom.
“As T-Mobile moves forward with its strategic initiatives to improve its market position, including expanding its network coverage and initiating LTE service, John has obviously the right skillset to lead the business into the future,” Obermann said.
John Legere said: “T-Mobile is taking a number of significant steps to revitalize the business and I look forward to leading our team and partners to accelerate these efforts to become a force in our industry.”
T-Mobile USA is currently investing in LTE and aiming to sell and lease back its towers as it attempts to move on from last year’s failed takeover – DT had wanted to sell the operator to AT&T for US$39bn before regulators effectively blocked the deal at the end of 2011.
