Spanish incumbent Telefonica has announced a number of senior management appointments including a new CEO Telefonica Europe and a new group COO.
Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete has been promoted to COO, replacing Julio Linares who has decided to leave the company. Until now, Alvarez-Pallete had been in charge of European operations.
Eva Castillo, until today a member of Telefonica’s board of directors, replaces him and has been appointed chairwoman and CEO of Telefonica Europe, while also maintaining her position on the company board.
In a meeting today, the company board also elected Santiago Fernandez Valbuena, chairman and CEO of Telefonica Latinoamerica, to join the Telefonica board where he will replace Sir David Arculus. Fernandez Valbuena will maintain his current executive responsibilities.
Furthermore Eduardo Navarro, director of strategy and alliances, will join the executive committee of Telefonica.
New COO Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete joined Telefonica in 1999 as general manager of finance for Telefonica Internacional, S.A. Later that year he was promoted to general manager of corporate finance in Telefonica.
From 2002 he headed Telefonica Latinoamerica until he became chairman and CEO of Telefonica Europe in late 2011.
