Myanmar Post and Telecommunication (MPT), the country’s sole telecoms services provider, will soon be privatised, according to the Myanmar Times citing a company statement.
If confirmed, this move would be in line with the government’s recently-announced ambition to open up the market to foreign companies.
According to the report citing U Kyaw Soe, principal of Telecommunications & Postal Training Centre at Myanmar’s Ministry of Communication, MPT will be dismantled to be reformed as Myanmar Telecom and will no longer receive funding from the government.
Meanwhile, three other private operators will reportedly be allowed to enter the market, including two foreign companies.
A new telecoms law is expected to be drafted for this purpose before the end of the year, after which an international tender will take place. The aim is for the successful bidders to be operating as early as 2013, according to the newspaper.
The aim of the liberalisation of Myanmar’s telecoms sector is reportedly to increase telecoms penetration to 75% by March 2016 from 5% at present.
