Carlos Slim’s Mexico-based telecoms group America Movil (AMX) is reportedly eyeing the Polish market, considering acquiring a stake in fibre optics infrastructure company Hawe – itself negotiating the purchase of a significant stake in state-owned TK Telekom – and mulling investments in mobile operator P4.
AMX, an unidentified telco and two private equity firms are all considering investing in Hawe, Polish business newspaper Puls Biznesu reported, without citing sources.
The Polish state-owned PKP Group disclosed in late July that it would enter into exclusive negotiations with Hawe and bid partner IT Polpager over the sale of its 47.91 stake in TK Telekom, expected to command a price of about PLN400m (US$112m).
Warsaw Stock Exchange-listed Hawe is reportedly seeking funds to help finance the acquisition.
PKP said in July that if it does not reach an agreement with the Hawe-led consortium within the allocated timeframe – the length of which was not revealed – it will enter into parallel talks with two other bidders: GTS Poland and Netia Exatel.
AMX – which recently secured sizeable stakes in Telekom Austria and Dutch telco KPN – could also target P4, Poland’s newest mobile operator, the Polish paper stated.
AMX, Hawe and PKP were not immediately available for comment.
