Costa Rican telecoms regulator Sutel yesterday kicked off its wireless tender, the auction for which is to take place in April.
The licence auction was long-expected to happen in 2010 and will put an end to the country’s telecoms monopoly. Sutel stated that the auction will open in April and that it hopes to complete the licence awarding in H2, most likely in September. The regulator added that Digicel, Telefonica and America Movil have already shown an interest in the licence.
3G services were recently launched on the Costa Rican market, a market which currently has 1.8 million mobile phone lines, operated by state owned Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE).
Costa Rica has a population of four million.
