State-owned Vietnamese operator Viettel has outbid rival Americatel to win spectrum licences in Peru after offering US$48.4m.
Peru’s agency for the promotion of private investment (Proinversion) was commissioned by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) to tender the licences in the 900MHz band.
As part of its winning bid, Viettel committed to offer free broadband to more than 700 state schools, hospitals and municipalities. It will also offer mobile services to 48 rural districts not already served.
The specific bands Viettel will operate in are 899-915 MHz and 944-960 MHz in the provinces of Lima and Callao and 902-915 MHz and 947-960 MHz in the rest of the Peru, according to a Proinversion official.
The minimum offer price set by the regulator was US$39.8m and to offer free broadband services to at least 500 state institutions.
Viettel and Entel’s Americatel were the only prequalified bidders.
Viettel first entered the Peruvian market in January 2011.
